As I have mentioned before in this column, I am a member of the Suja Lowenthal fan club. Last night, she reminded me why. Councilmember Lowenthal hosted the first ever State of the Second District Address to a large crowd at the Aquarium of the Pacific’s theater.
In attendance were numerous community leaders, council staff, city staff and some Downtown movers and shakers including Jane Netherton (Downtown Long Beach Associates), John Morris (Restaurateur) and Steve Goodling (Convention & Visitors Bureau).
What was unique about the event was that Lowenthal included the leaders of various neighborhood associations and organizations to give updates of the status of their neighborhoods. So not only did Lowenthal speak, but so did the community.
She offered a quick report card of her campaign promises. More parking, check. Noise enforcement, check. Focus on water quality, check. Not to mention other innovative ideas including the Street Car proposal and her support of the Breakwater reconfiguration.
Lowenthal also discussed future goals which includes aggressive retail recruitment in the Downtown and the creation of new business improvement districts and associations.
