Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed by a Long Beach Transit bus last week in downtown Long Beach. The bus driver was making a left turn and struck the man who was crossing the street in an unmarked crosswalk, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
The crash happened at about 1:05 p.m. on July 21 in the 400 block of Golden Shore, a small stretch of road south of Ocean Boulevard and near the parking lot for the Catalina Express, according to Long Beach police.
Police said the bus driver was making a left turn onto an access road when he struck the man in his 60s.
Good Samaritans rendered aid before paramedics arrived and took the victim to a hospital in critical condition. He died two days later, police said. His name and age were withheld pending family notification.
The bus driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
Police do not believe that speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were factors in the crash.
This was the 26th fatal crash of the year in Long Beach and the 14th involving a pedestrian. At this time last year, the city had recorded 28 fatal crashes, with 11 involving pedestrians. It finished last year with 55 fatal crashes, the highest tally in more than a decade.
In response, the City Council has been pushing to speed up street safety improvements.
