Long Beach police say they’ve arrested a driver suspected of speeding and being under the influence of alcohol when he struck and killed a man in Bixby Knolls Friday afternoon.

The crash happened around 3:13 p.m. in the 700 block of 45th Street, which is just east of Atlantic Avenue.

There, officers located the man suffering from life-threatening injuries to the lower body. Officers provided aid to the man, and he was transported by Long Beach Fire Department personnel to a local hospital, where he died.

Police say the driver, identified as 42-year-old Jose Trujillo of Long Beach, was speeding eastbound on 45th Street, east of Atlantic Avenue, when he struck the man who was standing next to his parked vehicle.

“The Ford pinned the pedestrian between the two vehicles before continuing eastbound and striking another parked vehicle,” the LBPD said in a statement Saturday morning, adding that the driver fled the scene and made no attempt to check on the man’s well-being following the crash.

Trujillo was later located by police in the area of 56th Street and Rose Avenue, authorities said.

Trujillo was arrested on suspicion of murder, driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, and one count of hit and run resulting in death or injury, according to the LBPD. His bail was set at $2 million.

The man’s identification is being withheld as the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office works to notify his next of kin.
