Police say a 51-year-old homeless man died after crashing a homemade go-cart in North Long Beach Tuesday evening.

Investigators suspect a medical emergency may have caused him to lose control and hit a parked Chevrolet Silverado, the Long Beach Police Department said in a news release.

Police said the wreck happened around 6:50 p.m. near 68th Way and Belhurst Avenue.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and took the go-cart driver to a hospital where he died. Authorities identified him as Rafael Joseph Phillips Jr. They described him as “a 51-year-old person experiencing homelessness.”

Although police suspect a medical emergency caused the crash, they’re still investigating. They do not believe speeding, or impaired or distracted driving are factors.

Police asked anyone with more details about what happened to contact Detective Kevin Johansen at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips can be sent through Crime Stoppers.
