A man died days after being shot in a park near Downtown, authorities said Saturday.

Jose Rodriguez, 23, of Long Beach, died Friday of his injuries after being shot at around 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of Chestnut Avenue, in the Washington neighborhood.

Bystanders in the park performed life-saving measures on the man until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived and took the man to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

Two days later, police learned that the man had died of his injuries at the hospital.

Police said Rodriguez was in the park when two unknown assailants approached him and began shooting.

The two suspects fled the park eastbound towards Chestnut Avenue.
