A 34-year-old Long Beach man died at a local hospital after he was shot in Central Long Beach Saturday afternoon, police said.

Officers got a call about a shooting near the 1000 block of E. Anaheim Street at around 2 p.m. As they made their way to the scene, police said they were notified that a man with a gunshot wound to the upper body was transported to a local hospital.

Officers located evidence at the scene, and while they continued to investigate, they learned that the wounded man had died at the hospital as a result of the gunshot wound, police said.

The victim and an assailant were in a verbal dispute prior to the shooting, according to police.

“Detectives learned there was a brief exchange of words between the victim and the suspect before the suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim,” police said. “The suspect was last seen fleeing the area on foot.”

Police said the shooting may have been gang-related.

Homicide detectives were dispatched to the scene, LBPD spokesman Alvino Herrera said.
