Authorities announced Monday that a 72-year-old man died at a hospital late last month a day after he was struck by a car in Long Beach.

The incident happened at about 7:40PM on Wednesday, August 30 near Santa Fe Avenue and WIllow Street, according to a release from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Arriving officers found the man, identified as Roberto Venegas, in the street. Long Beach paramedics transported him to a local hospital with major head and body trauma.

Police officials said Venegas died from his injuries on Thursday, August 31 but the hospital did not notify the department, which learned of his death on Monday when contacted by the coroner’s office.

According to a preliminary investigation, the victim was walking eastbound across Santa Fe Avenue at Willow Street, in the marked south crosswalk, when he was struck by a 35-year-old Long Beach woman driving a 2009 Nissan Versa south on Santa Fe in the No. 1 lane. The woman remained at the scene.

“Witnesses and video surveillance footage confirmed the pedestrian entered the crosswalk against a red light and the Nissan entered the intersection on a green light,” officials stated.

Venegas, a resident of Mexico, was here visiting family at the time, according to the release.
