A 63-year-old motorist died today near Recreation Park after speeding on the wrong side of the road and crashing into a parked car, when he was ejected from his vehicle, police said.

Officers responded to Sixth Street and Santiago Avenue around 10:11 a.m. to a report of a person injured in a traffic collision.

In their preliminary investigation, officers found that the man had been driving a 2021 Nissan Rogue southbound on Santiago Avenue when he traveled on the wrong side of the road and struck a parked vehicle head-on. The driver was then ejected from the Nissan, police said, and the unoccupied Nissan rolled into the front yard of a neighboring residence. No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the collision or hurt as a result of this collision, police said.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said, adding that speed was presumed to be a factor.

The man’s identification was being held pending the notification of relatives.

Anyone with information regarding the collision was urged to contact Detective Kelsey Myers with the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355. Tipsters who prefer to stay anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
