A man died Thursday evening after apparently jumping off of the Gerald Desmond Bridge, according to Long Beach Police officials.

According to Lt. Don Mauk of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), police were dispatched at around 8:15PM regarding a vehicle in the westbound lane of the Gerald Desmond Bridge with its hazard lights on, and a “subject standing on the rail” of the bridge.

When officers responded, they found the vehicle on the bridge and later found the subject at the bottom of the bridge, Mauk said.

Long Beach fire officials later responded and determined the man was dead at the scene.

One lane was closed while the officers continued to conduct the investigation, but traffic has continued in the remaining lane uninterrupted, Mauk said.

The case remains under investigation.
