Police took a man into custody after a standoff when he refused to turn over a metal object in his hand on Sunday near a grocery store in the Los Altos area, authorities said.

Close to 11 a.m., a 24-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of petty theft and placed in the backseat of a patrol vehicle in the 2000 block of Bellflower Boulevard, Long Beach police said. Video from the scene appears to show the police cars in front of Lazy Acres grocery store.

Shortly after detaining the man, officers saw an unknown metal object in the man’s hands, which they later discovered to be a metal torch lighter.

“The suspect refused the officers’ commands to surrender the object inside the patrol vehicle,” LBPD said in a written statement.

Police and a mental health evaluation responded and attempted to communicate with the man to try and gain compliance, but the suspect refused, police said.

SWAT was then activated and took the man into custody Sunday afternoon, police said.

The man was transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure to be cleared for booking, police said.

A spokeswoman said police did not use force in detaining the man.
