A man was injured Friday night after a shooting in North Long Beach, police said.

Police responded to the 3500 block of East 65th Street after reports of shots being fired in an area near North Long Beach’s Ramona Park.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found bullet casings, indicating that a shooting had occurred, LBPD spokesperson Allison Gallagher said. But no victims were found at the scene of the shooting, she added.

Shortly after, officers were notified of a man who had checked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower body, Gallagher said.

After police determined the man was the victim in the North Long Beach shooting, they learned he was standing outside his car when someone in an undisclosed vehicle drove up next to him, Gallagher said.

The victim and one of the people in the “suspect vehicle” briefly talked before shots rang out, police said.

That’s when the victim realized he had been shot in the lower body, police said.

By the time police got to the 3500 block of East 65th Street, the suspect vehicle had fled the area and the victim transported himself to a local hospital, Gallagher said. He is expected to survive, she said. LBPD is investigating the incident, classifying it as a possible “gang-related shooting,” Gallagher said.

Long Beach police define “gang-related” crime as any crime “committed for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with any criminal street gang.”

Gang detectives also responded to the scene last night, along with the city’s Coordinated Response Team, which is made up of detectives, patrol officers, a divisional crime analyst, a public information officer and a forensic science specialist who meet daily to discuss strategies for reducing violent crime with a focus on gun violence.

North Long Beach, along with the West, Central and Downtown, have faced the brunt of gun violence in the city this year already, including Thursday night, when a 29-year-old Long Beach resident shot three people in North Long Beach and lead police to a Carson church where he held a woman hostage during a standoff with SWAT before he eventually killed himself.
