9:01pm | A Long Beach man killed an elderly woman and then tried to kill himself Thursday, Long Beach police said.
Long Beach Police Department officers responded to a call for service regarding a dead woman and a man threatening to commit suicide at a residence in the 3500 block of Los Coyotes Diagonal at about 10 a.m. Thursday, according to information provided by LBPD spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.
Upon arriving at the scene, the officers discovered a 63-year-old man who had sustained stab wounds and an 88-year-old woman bleeding in another room, Pratt said.
Long Beach Fire Department paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene and rushed the man to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and was late this afternoon listed in critical condition, she said.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that the man killed the woman before attempting to take his own life, Pratt said.
Detectives believe the man and woman are related, but their identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Malcolm Evans and Todd Johnson at 562-570-7244.
