A 33-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to 21 years in prison for the shooting death of another man in an industrial area of Long Beach more than four years ago.

Carlos Ohm was convicted of one count of voluntary manslaughter after pleading no contest to the charges last month, court records show. He also admitted to the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Authorities said Ohm shot and killed 38-year-old Felipe Solorio-Nava in the early hours of June 19, 2018, at a small homeless encampment on the corner of 17th Street and Daisy Avenue.

Ohm was arrested in connection to the shooting later that morning about three blocks away from the homeless encampment, although a motive for the crime or whether the two knew each other remains unclear. He’s remained jailed in lieu of $3.1 million bail ever since.

During court proceedings on Tuesday, Ohm surprised his attorney when he refused to postpone his sentencing to Friday.

After handing down the sentence, Long Beach Superior Court Judge Daniel Lowenthal acknowledged how supportive Ohm’s family has been by constantly showing up to his court proceedings.

He also advised Ohm that he had the opportunity to be released from prison before his sentence was completed, as long as he kept up good behavior and participated in educational programs.

“You clearly have all these people that love and support you,” Lowenthal said. “Even though this is a big sentence… you have the chance to come home way before that.”
