A man and woman were walking in an alleyway late Thursday evening in the Zaferia district when multiple unknown assailants approached the pair and shot the man, police said.

Long Beach police said the shooting happened at 11:41 p.m. in an alley at the 1600 block of Junipero Avenue.

The man and the woman had been walking in the alleyway near that address when “an unknown number of suspects” approached the pair and shot the man in the upper body, according to LBPD spokesperson Richard Mejia.

Police report that the woman was not harmed in the shooting. The man was taken to a local hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department for his injuries.

The shooter and the other assailants fled the scene before officers arrived, police said, and officers found bullet casings at the scene.

Police said they do not have any suspect information and have not identified a motive for the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
