A man was shot in Central Long Beach Saturday night but refused to cooperate with police investigating the incident, authorities said.

At 10:05 p.m., officers responding to Long Beach Memorial hospital for an assault with a deadly weapon call encountered the victim with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his upper torso, said Long Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez.

The victim told officers he was shot near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and 16th Street—near California Recreation Park and across the street from Poly High School—earlier that evening.

However, police did not find evidence of a shooting when they canvassed the area, De Prez said.

Authorities said the victim was uncooperative during the preliminary investigation and no suspect information was available.

The incident remains under investigation.
