A man was transported to a local hospital by a family member Wednesday evening after being shot in North Long Beach, authorities said.

The shooting happened sometime around 6:02 p.m. in the area of Cedar Avenue and Mountain Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department. Although officers at the scene found bullet casings, no victims turned up.

A short time later, however, officers responded to a local hospital where a man had arrived with a gunshot wound to the lower body, police said, adding that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police discovered the man had been walking in the area where the casings were located when he was approached by a male suspect. Following a short altercation between the two, the suspect shot the man and fled in a vehicle in an unknown direction, police said.

The man then called a family member who transported him to the hospital, authorities said.

Police do not have further information on the suspect.

No other injuries were reported, according to police, who are still investigating.
