A Belmont Shore man died in police custody early Monday after he was Tasered for failing to comply with officers attempting to detain him for acting violently in his residence, authorities said.

Police said they were called to investigate the man’s erratic behavior at 1:20 a.m. in the 100 block of Santa Ana Ave.

When officers arrived, they saw the man yelling and breaking items, police said. He had multiple cuts on his body, according to authorities.

“The subject was bleeding profusely, possibly from cuts sustained while breaking out windows,” Long Beach police officials said.

Believing the man was “in an altered state and in need of medical assistance,” police said they requested paramedics to the scene to stand by.

When the man exited his residence while still acting erratically, officers tried to detain him, according to authorities.

“When the subject failed to comply with officers’ orders, and began struggling with them, he was Tased, and subsequently taken into custody,” officials said.

Paramedics began life-saving measures when the man then became unresponsive, police said. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his family. The coroner’s office will determine what caused his death.

The incident is being investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, as is typical with in-custody deaths.
