10:55am | The Office of 1st District Councilmember Robert Garcia, the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, and Long Beach Organic invite the public to a groundbreaking ceremony for the Mary Molina Community Garden on Thursday, June 9, at 2 p.m.
Mary Molina Community Garden is located at 1640 West 20th St. The .15-acre site will take approximately four months to complete. The garden will be constructed and overseen by Long Beach Organic. The construction project will include garden plots, water line and spigot installation, fencing, and a decomposed granite path to an ADA-accessible area with raised planters.
Mary Molina was a Long Beach schoolteacher who also served as Regional President of the Parent Teacher Association. She is a member of the Molina family, who founded Molina Healthcare and who donated the property to the city of Long Beach. The park will contribute to the open space needs of West Long Beach.
“I’m grateful to the Molina family for their generous donation, and very excited to create another community garden in Long Beach,” Garcia said in a statement. “This will be a great place to honor an incredible woman.”
