Councilmember Robert Garcia celebrates last month the New City School Urban Farm with local youth.
6:00am | Mayor Bob Foster and First District Councilmember Robert Garcia kicked-off Build Day for the New City Farm at 225 East 15th Street, just off Long Beach Blvd. this morning.
Covered here, Councilmember Garcia introduced the farm at an event in May.
Community volunteers, local dignitaries, parents, students, teachers and staff of the New City School spent the day constructing the farm.
“I am extremely proud of this project, the community and New City School,” said Garcia in a statement. “This farm will enhance the neighborhood, and encourage healthy eating and living.”
The organic farm will be operated by a professional farmer, students, parents and staff. The farm will also offer opportunities for members of the community to participate in sustainable agriculture. The City’s Long Beach Housing Development Company will lease the lot, vacant for more than ten years, to the New City School.
The quarter-acre site will include fruit trees, vegetable gardens, a windmill for power, and, eventually, some animals. The garden will help children learn about farming, nutrition, environmental biology, and conservation.
Partners include the City of Long Beach, the Port of Long Beach, Home Depot, Conservation Corps of LB, We Love Long Beach, Revolution Foods, Matson Navigation, Evergreen Shipping, Studio One Eleven, H&H Nursery, Tree People, LB Water Department, At Last Cafe, and more.
