Southwest Airlines flights are expected to resume normal operations Friday after more than a week of cancelations and delays that stranded passengers across the country, the airline said Thursday.

While the airline continues to operate about one-third of its schedule Thursday, Friday could see “minimal disruptions” for passengers, according to a statement from Southwest.

“We are encouraged by the progress we’ve made to realign crew, their schedules, and our fleet,” Southwest said. “With another holiday weekend full of important connections for our valued Customers and Employees, we are eager to return to a state of normalcy.”

Earlier this week, some 30 flights were canceled at Long Beach Airport, but the number of cancelations have been declining since. On Thursday, the airport’s website showed just 22 inbound and outbound flights had been canceled with 14 listed as “on time” or already landed or departed.

As of Thursday, FlightAware, a website that tracks airline cancellations, showed three Friday canceled flights that were scheduled to depart from Long Beach. The website showed zero inbound flights to Long Beach as canceled.

Airport officials urged passengers this week to check their flight status before showing up to the facility to fly.

Widespread cancelations have been attributed to Southwest’s outdated scheduling system in addition to a winter storm that caused problems for air travel during the holiday travel season. The airline pledged to invest in “new solutions to manage wide-scale disruptions” in its statement issued Thursday.

Passengers who have been affected by cancellations or delays can submit claims to a new portal set up by Southwest to take reimbursement requests for meals, lodging and alternate travel. The page can also be used to try and find lost luggage.

Southwest Airlines is Long Beach Airport’s largest tenant, holding 38 of the 53 daily flight slots currently allocated at the airport.
