4:35pm | The month of May is Breakwater Awareness Month in the city of Long Beach, and three events for supporters of breakwater reconfiguration have been scheduled.
First up is “Big Thursday” at Shelter Surf Shop on Fourth Street’s Retro Row this Thursday, May 12, at 6 p.m. Hosted by Councilman Patrick O’Donnell, the social forum will double as an awards ceremony for advocates of breakwater reconfiguration to recognize and acknowledge the effort and progress made toward bringing waves back to Long Beach.
The second annual Paddle Out in Memory of the Waves will be held on Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m. at the Granada Landing. This “ceremony” will be held in traditional Hawaiian fashion. Participants will will paddle out from the Granada Landing and lay flowers in the water to “honor the loss the city has suffered from years of unclean water with no wave circulation,” O’Donnell said in a Wednesday e-mail.
Te final event will be a town hall-style meeting at Ecco’s Pizza on Wednesday, May 25, at 7 p.m. Staff from the City Manager’s Office will be on hand to update the community on the status of the breakwater study as well as what lies ahead should reconfiguration become a reality.
