A man speeding on the 91 Freeway on a motorcycle died Sunday afternoon after evading a California Highway Patrol officer and crashing into a SUV in Lakewood, officials said.

The incident started shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sunday when the motorcyclist had been speeding eastbound on the 91 Freeway, CHP spokesman Marcos Iniguez said. A CHP officer tried pulling the rider over after he exited the freeway at Lakewood Boulevard, but the driver sped away southbound on Lakewood Boulevard between 90 and 100 miles per hour.

Officials believe a driver in a Kia Sorento was traveling west on South Street and had entered the intersection at Lakewood Boulevard on a green light when the motorcyclist entered it on a red light going southbound on Lakewood. He lost control of the motorcycle, sliding on its left side and as he entered the intersection and collided with the Kia.

“The officer, who radioed that he lost sight of the rider, came upon the traffic collision moments later,” Iniguez said.

The officer who had been pursuing the rider arrived and began performing CPR on him before he was transported by ambulance to Long Beach Memorial Hospital where he later died.

The name of the motorcyclist is not available.

Officials ask people who have information on the incident to contact the Santa Fe Springs CHP office at 562-868-0503 and ask for Officer J. Chew.
