A driver died early Sunday morning after his SUV veered off a freeway transition road in Long Beach and overturned, authorities said.

The unidentified motorist, whose identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin, was driving a 2003 Kia SUV on the transition road from the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway to the westbound Artesia (91) Freeway at about 1:45AM when he “failed to safely negotiate the curvature of the roadway” and lost control of the car, said California Highway Patrol officials.

The SUV traveled northeast, off the road and overturned, coming to a rest on its roof.

The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.
