UPDATE | A motorist who was listed in critical condition after he crashed into a tree in Long Beach on the Fourth of July has died, authorities announced today.

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) was notified of his death this week, officials stated.

The victim, who was identified as 26-year-old Heriberto Maldonado of Long Beach, remained hospitalized in critical condition until he was pronounced dead on July 9.

Authorities said the solo crash happened at about 9:00PM at Santa Fe Avenue and 29th Street.

“When officers arrived, they observed a 2006 Chevy HHR had collided into a tree on the raised center median,” LBPD officials stated in a release. “The vehicle was occupied by an unconscious male adult. Long Beach Fire personnel responded and rendered aid to the driver, and transported him to a local hospital in critical condition.”

Maldonado was traveling northbound in the No. 2 lane of Santa Fe Avenue when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle drifted left and collided with a tree on the center median, according to a preliminary investigation.

7/5/17 at 10:48AM | A motorist was seriously injured Tuesday night when he crashed into a tree in the city’s Upper Westside, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

The single-vehicle crash happened near Santa Fe Avenue at Columbia Street at 9:05PM, LBPD spokeswoman Delmy Hughes said.

The driver, who sustained serious injuries, was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition, according to Hughes.

No other vehicles or persons were involved in the incident.

Authorities are investigating the crash, including if impairment was a factor.
