The first murder of the year happened yesterday evening, resulting in the death of an 25-year-old Long Beach resident.

At 8:40PM Wednesday, Long Beach Police Department responded to a shooting call in the 1700 block of Cherry Avenue near Pacific Coast Highway. Victim Levert Johnson was found still alive with multiple gunshot wounds. After being transported to a hospital, Johnson was pronounced deceased.

{loadposition murdermap}According to preliminaries, Johnson was standing at a bus stop with a group when the suspect confronted Johnson. After words were exchanged, the subject used a handgun to shoot Johnson before fleeing on foot.

The incident is possibly gang-related and the investigation is ongoing.
