The Long Beach branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will honor women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math known collectively as STEM during its monthly general meeting on Sunday, September 17.
“There’s a stereotype about women—especially women of color—that sciences, technologies are hard,” said chapter president Naomi Rainey-Pierson. “We’re using this as a platform to say that our young people, girls and boys, all views, all colors and ages, sizes, genders and whatever—you can do science. It is not hard. And if you have a problem, there are agencies like NAACP, your school district has tutorial programs, your colleges have tutorial programs, the libraries have programs. Just stick in there.”
Honorees include retired Congresswoman Diane E. Watson who will be the keynote speaker, St. Mary Medical Center President Carolyn Caldwell, recording artist/television personality Myesha Chaney, Long Beach Community Improvement League Executive Director Farah Naz Khaleghi and retired software engineer who wrote software for the Space Shuttle Program Cecilia Poindexter-Harrison.
The free event will be held at 3:00PM at Ernest McBride Sr. Park, located at 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A reception for the honorees will be held after the program.
