Changes in city management continue with the appointment of Craig Johnson to administer the Enterprise Zone Program, one of Long Beach’s most powerful economic development tools.
An expert in economic development, Johnson brings more than 17 years of public service experience to the plate. He most recently served as the Administrator of the Business Technology Center of Los Angeles County, and Manager of both the Mid-Alameda Corridor and Altadena Enterprise Zones.
Enterprise Zones are designed to benefit and retain existing businesses while attracting new ones. Businesses within the Enterprise Zone are eligible for tax and investment incentives that can promote economic growth and generate new jobs.
“Craig’s experience administering three Los Angeles County Enterprise Zones made him an ideal fit for the Long Beach position,” said Economic Development Manager Robert Swayze.
The Enterprise Zone includes approximately 41.4 square miles, almost 72 percent of the city, and is significantly larger than the previous Enterprise Zone, which was approximately 26.5 square miles.
“Not only is the city’s newly redesignated zone larger,” Swayze said, “But we want to substantially increase the participation of Long Beach businesses with this great incentive tool. Craig has the experience and knowledge, and can speak the dollars and cents language that firms understand and appreciate.”
