In the special election aimed at December 29 to replace the controversial Michael Shane Ellis for the District 3 seat on the Long Beach Unified School District board, Richard Lewis has announced his intention to enter the race.

Lewis sent an e-mail announcement to friends and supporters today, with the following message:

Over the next few years, our school district will confront major budget issues and organizational challenges. These challenges require a strong leader with demonstrated experience in fiscal management to create a responsible and stable budget, while ensuring that our children’s academic success remains at the forefront of all our decisions and policies.

The Press-Telegram‘s Karen Robes Meeks explains that Lewis is a boardmember of the Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) and president of the East Village Association. Lewis will formally announce his candidacy and meet with supporters at Gladstone’s in downtown Long Beach, at 6:00pm this Monday.
