Nine people were arrested over the weekend during a DUI checkpoint held in Downtown Long Beach, police said Monday.

The Long Beach Police Department Traffic Section conducted the checkpoint from 7:00PM Saturday to 3:00AM Sunday on westbound Ocean Boulevard west of Pacific Avenue.

During the operation, officers checked for signs of intoxication in drivers.

In total, 2,099 vehicles passed through the checkpoint with 417 drivers being screened for driving under the influence.

During the checkpoint, 12 standardized field sobriety tests were conducted, five drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, four drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, five drivers were cited for unlicensed driving, one driver was cited for driving with a suspended license and one vehicle was impounded.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
