Nonprofit of the Year

Casa Youth Shelter has served youth and families in over 50 cities across Southern California providing shelter, counseling, support services and other resources for the past 43 years.

This year, the organization has been recognized as Nonprofit of the Year by Sen. Tom Umberg, as part of the sixth annual California Nonprofits Day, in which legislators across California select a nonprofit of the year in their district.

Long Beach has remained one of the organization’s top three serving cities, year after year, according to a press release. This year was no exception, as the shelter’s doors remained open 24/7 throughout the pandemic.

“Casa Youth Shelter has helped countless children and families overcome difficult times by providing them with comfort, safety, and a continuously supportive community,” said Umberg in a press release. “The 34th Senate District is lucky to have Casa as a valuable resource.”

Summer workshop series

The Youth Leadership Institute is hosting a six-week summer workshop series for youth between the ages of 14 and 18 on Wednesdays.

Participating youth will learn about getting involved with local social justice campaigns and be connected with local leaders while learning how to advocate for the community.

The program, called the YLI Long Beach Summer Program, will begin with a kickoff event on July 7, from 4 to 5 p.m.

RSVP for the kickoff event here.

Youth will receive a stipend for participating in the virtual workshops and an in-person assessment project at the end of the program.

Run/Walk Fundraiser

On Saturday, Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Transformation Support Networks, a grassroots recovery support organization, is hosting a fundraising event in honor of the organization’s first anniversary, and they are looking for vendors to participate.

The event proceeds will go to fund their Essential Hygiene Program, future sober events, and other activities. Vendor pricing starts at $100.

Vendors ideally would provide community, recovery, wellness, and self-care services. While onsite sales are not permitted, this would be an opportunity to promote products and services.

Registration is open until Aug. 1.

The event will be located at El Dorado Park East Regional Park.

For additional questions, email Tammy Steward-Nelson at [email protected].
