The neighborhood of North Alamitos Beach—bounded by 7th St., 4th St., Alamitos Ave. and Cherry Ave.—will receive its second welcome marker at a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony this Sunday.
The new marker, which has already been installed on the northeast corner of 4th St. and Alamitos Ave. at the Tire Trax auto center, is a monolithic monument with “North Alamitos Beach” emblazoned vertically down its side and is the exact same boundary marker that was installed on the corner of 4th St. and Cherry Ave. a few months ago.
Both monuments were paid for by Neighborhood Partnership Program grants, which fund a variety of improvement and beautification projects proposed by established neighborhood/community groups in certain target zones throughout the city.
The North Alamitos Beach Association has received four NPP grants so far—one for tree-planting and three for its neighborhood markers, with the most recently approved one to be installed in a few months on the corner of 7th St. and Cherry Ave.
“We started seeing upscale neighbors that had nice neighborhoods markers and decided that we want to designate our neighborhood as well,” says JR White, Treasurer of NABA of why the group applied for the marker grants. “We also wanted to show people that we might be a little more urban, but this is still a pleasant place to live and a nice neighborhood.”
Because there is limited space along the boundaries of North Alamitos Beach, NABA has been working with the property owners at these intersections to reach agreements for the placement of these neighborhood markers. The fourth and final marker will hopefully be installed on the currently vacant corner of Alamitos Ave. and 7th St. NABA is waiting until the Museum of Latin American Art, which owns the land, finalizes its plans for the plot before it submits another grant application.
“[These markers will be] something that increases visibility for our neighborhood and extends the ceiling for people coming from the Downtown Arts District as well as bridges the gap between Rose Park and other nice neighborhoods,” White says. “I’m always about making a great neighborhood even better.”
The North Alamitos Beach Association will be hosting a dedication/ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, August 5 from 12PM to 2PM on the corner of Alamitos Ave. and 4th St. Food trucks will be on hand.
