A Long Beach police detective undercover opened fire on a suspect in a car who apparently brandished a handgun yesterday in North Long Beach near Orange Avenue and North Banner Drive.

According to Sgt. Aaron Eaton of the LBPD, the detective was on foot and outside of his vehicle when the shooting occurred at 1PM. It unclear whether the suspect was hit and as of yet, there was no formal indication that the suspect fired his own weapon.

The male suspect, who was believed to be accompanied by someone else, fled in a vehicle that was eventually located about two-and-a-half miles away from the original scene in the 6400 block of Rose Avenue. After a search, police found no one.

Anyone with knowledge of the shooting was asked to call the Long Beach Police Department’s homicide detectives at (562) 570-7244.
