City officials on Monday announced one new death and five new cases linked to COVID-19 in Long Beach.

The victim was a man in his 60s who had an underlying health condition and was linked to a long-term care facility. The latest death brings the death toll number to 45 in Long Beach.

With five new confirmed cases of COVID-19, the total now stands at 953. The number of those who have recovered from the coronavirus has also increased to about 617. The number of people hospitalized with the virus remained at 50.

Countywide, officials today reported 39 more deaths, resulting in a total of 1,569 deaths as well as 591 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total to 32,258.

Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer cautioned that the number of new cases is typically lower on Monday because many labs don’t test over the weekend.

Today also marks the first day that Long Beach beach paths reopen with strict guidelines.

Los Angeles County beaches are scheduled to reopen for active use starting Wednesday. Parking lots, piers and boardwalks will remain off limits, county officials announced today.

County beachgoers will also be restricted to active uses. In other words sunbathing, sitting on the sand, setting up canopies and picnicking will all be off limits, according to the Department of Beaches and Harbors.

Beach parking lots will remain closed, as will the beach bike path and all piers and boardwalks, according to the county. Beachgoers will also have to wear masks and maintain a six-foot buffer between themselves and others under continued social-distancing requirements.
