I apologize for the extended absence. It is the result of two factors: my overly-ambitious standard of having to try a place three times before sharing with you and changing economic realties – which mean I am eating at home much more often.
So he’s what I propose to do: still focus on the places I love, but write about more of them and sooner so that you don’t go months with out hearing from me. Hopefully this will result in more postings from me and more responses from you.
So with that bit of housekeeping out of the way, I have a quick update on a favorite about which I have written.
I continue to love PapaCicio’s – a pizzeria on the far-east side of Long Beach. On my most recent visit to have my favorite and highly recommended “pizza con salsiche,” the owner Sal told me that he had developed gluten-free pizza dough. The gluten-free crust is made out of rice dough, which is very soft, so the pizzas only come in a small size. The dough is lighter than his regular crust, and has a nice crunch with a slight sweetness that blends nicely with his homemade tomato sauce. It was good – but nowhere near as good as the gluten-full original crust, which is sublime.
So why do I write this? Even though I have never met gluten I did not like, I know many people are on gluten-free diets, including my mom. For my mom, this was nothing short of a miracle. Finally a pizza for people who cannot eat wheat! She enjoyed her pizza tremendously! I think she was a little too excited, because she said her pizza tasted better than the regular crust – which is crazy. But she can be forgiven for her enthusiasm, because for her and others who have to endure a gluten-free diet, this pizza is a revelation.
So with or without gluten, if you want pizza, PapaCicio’s is the place for you!
