Do you have a few minutes?  Sure you do, everyone has a few minutes.  You have a few minutes to read this and other Posts on this website and whatever you will surf to next.  We all have a few minutes.  How about an hour?  Can you spare and hour?  Mmmm, maybe not quite an hour, depends on what I want the hour for, better find out about that before you commit to sparing an hour.

The hour I am asking for is one hour’s pay.  Of the 2,000 or more hours you will be working this year I am asking that you give up your compensation for just one of those hours to make our community a better place, to make a kid a better student, to join in with other members of our community for a common goal.

The Long Beach Education Foundation is asking everyone in the Greater Long Beach Area to donate the equivalent of one hour’s pay to the One Hour For Education fundraiser.  If you are an attorney making $150 per hour, a real estate agent averaging $50 per hour, a civil servant making $45 per hour, or a part-time waitress going to school making $11 per hour—we are asking for just one hour of your pay and none of your time to help improve education in our community.

One Hour For Education is a fundraiser where you do not need to buy a dress, put on a suit, buy a raffle ticker or put in a silent auction bid for a “Movie Night” basket.  You can attend the event at your desk, at your home, or from your mobile phone.  Just go to www.onehourforeducation.com and click on the donation button and make your donation of one hour’s pay to help children in need in our community.

Proceeds from the One Hour For Education fundraiser will go to Rick Rackers’, an auxiliary of the Assistance League of Long Beach, “Operation School Bell” program that provides school uniforms for children in need.  With mandatory uniforms for grades Kindergarten through 8th grade and a few of the high schools many children in our community are not able to afford the required uniform and must borrow uniforms from their school nurses.  Operation School Bell provides uniforms and other items to thousands of children each year.  Each uniform “kit” contains tops, bottoms, underwear, toiletries, a backpack, the whole kit costs $60 per student.  With a goal of over 5000 students to outfit they need over $300,000 this year, and will need more next year.

Since LBUSD adopted mandatory school uniforms attendance, test scores, behavior, every area of student achievement and development has improved.  Children without uniforms feel “left out” and often embarrassed at not being dressed like their classmates.  Operation School Bell helps these children.  Once outfitted by Operation School Bell dramatic improvement occurs with those students as they have confidence and a sense of belonging.

Just one hour is all we need.  You do not need to go anywhere, buy any tickets, eat the standard fundraiser chicken or fish.  You just need to click on the link and donate one hour’s pay from all the hours you have worked this year to make your community better one student at a time.

Do you have a few minutes?  Then spend one hour.
