One person was injured and another was displaced early Sunday following a fire in Long Beach’s Hellman neighborhood, authorities said.

The fire broke out around 1:41 a.m. in the 1000 block of Gardenia Avenue, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

When fire crews arrived at the two-story, two-unit backhouse, they discovered flames and smoke coming from the first-floor, LBFD spokesperson Jake Heflin said. Inside the first-floor unit, a person was found responsive; they were evaluated at the scene and taken to a local hospital, Heflin said.

The fire was contained to just the first-floor unit and only minor smoke damage was reported on the second-floor, according to Heflin. The occupant of the second-floor unit was displaced and is currently staying with family, he added.

The cause has yet to be determined.
