A man died Wednesday morning when he was struck by a car whose driver fled the scene afterward, police said.

Police said the man was walking in the eastbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway near Ohio Avenue just before 5:30 a.m. when the driver of a vehicle struck him from behind and drove away.

Authorities found the man in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries to the upper body, police said. He was pronounced dead shortly after. His identity was not immediately released as the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office works to notify his relatives.

Long Beach police said a woman later turned herself in at the Signal Hill Police station, saying she’d been the driver of the vehicle. Police identified her as 55-year-old Cher Srey of Long Beach.

She was then transported to the Long Beach Police Department where she was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run before being released, police said. Police did not say why she was released or whether she was held on bail at any point.

Police said speed, impaired and distracted driving are not considered factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
