A 57-year-old man was killed while walking on a 405 Freeway on-ramp in Long Beach late Wednesday night, according to the CHP.

The crash happened around 11 p.m. on the Spring Street entrance to the southbound 405, the CHP said in a statement.

A driver in a Pontiac Grand Am was going about 40 mph on the ramp when he saw the pedestrian directly in front of him walking toward the right shoulder, according to the CHP.

The driver swerved to the left to try to avoid hitting the man, but he jumped backward at the same time and collided with the car’s hood and windshield, according to the statement.

Pedestrian died from his injuries sustained in the crash, the CHP said.

Authorities haven’t released his name.
