UPDATE | A man struck by a compact SUV Wednesday morning in East Long Beach has died from his injuries, according to authorities.

An 18-year-old Long Beach man driving a 2006 Saturn Vue south on Bellflower Boulevard turned left onto eastbound Spring Street on a green left-turn arrow when, at the same time, a pedestrian began walking north across Spring Street in the east crosswalk against a red hand pedestrian signal, a statement from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) said.

The pedestrian was then struck by the vehicle.

Arriving officers found the injured man, a 57-year-old Long Beach resident, lying in the eastbound lanes of Spring Street, east of the intersection. He was subsequently transported by paramedics to a local hospital in critical condition where he later died, according to the release.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, authorities said. The influence of alcohol or drugs does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The victim will be identified by the coroner’s office once relatives have been notified.
