A free screening of the award-winning documentary Growing Cities will be shown at the Main Library in Long Beach on Wednesday, November 12. In short, you should attend to learn and discuss better sustainability practices for Long Beach regarding food production.

Presented by Sustainable Long Beach, the 60-minute screening will be preceded by a mixer where attendees will work with organizers to identify potential spaces in Long Beach for community gardens, farms and other types of food production sites.

After the screening, a discussion panel will feature several leaders in sustainability practices, including Larry Rich, Sustainability coordinator for the City of Long Beach, Abel Ruiz and Isaac Michaca from the Youth Empowerment Network in Santa Ana and Jesse Frutos of Lincoln Spring Farms.

The event is sponsored by the Harbor Area Farmers Markets, and is supported by Project Plateful, a healthy food access and advocacy organization. Additional partners include Long Beach Fresh, dedicated to expanding Long Beach’s local food economy and infrastructure, Long Beach Public Library, Sustainable Long Beach, providing support for sustainability projects city-wide and Shift Long Beach, creating positive social change through empowering, educational events.

Even if it means planting a single seed in the tiniest of window boxes, we can take these small steps as a community toward a more sustainable future.
