In a partnership with Studio One Eleven, nonprofit Children Today has unveiled their new Eco House, an eco-friendly daycare facility that will help further the organization’s mission to alleviate the problem of child homelessness.
Welcoming homeless infants, toddlers, and preschoolers as their families hope to put their lives back together through schooling and employment, the Eco House has taken over a previous daycare facility by way of a reuse development through Studio One Eleven. The property was purchased in the summer of 2013 and will be LEED certified, hence its “eco” moniker.
This marks the third “playhouse” for the organization, which currently hosts a Playhouse West and a Playhouse North. West opened in 2000 at 525 E. 7th St. and houses 32 infants, toddlers and preschoolers daily. The Playhouse North, located at 1900 E. South St., opened in 2008 and houses 32 toddlers and preschoolers daily.
The new facility, located at 2952 Long Beach Blvd., will integrate services from both the West and North playhouses into one facility. $1.25M in funds have thus far been raised.
The project was coordinated by the Eco House Committee, a group of influential Long Beach designers and doers. Chaired by Marsha Naify, the group includes Josh Lowenthal, Alex Chernin, Jon Glasgow (Interstices), Brian Ulaszewski (City Fabrick), Michael Bohn (Studio One Eleven), Martin Howard (Howard CDM), Becky Blair, and Children Today Executive Director Dora Jacildo.
