The once-renowned Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, the host of the 1968 and 1976 Olympic Trials, is no longer around, but plans for its replacement are still in their infancy.

About a year after the city hosted its last conceptual design meeting, the City of Long Beach is inviting residents to view the proposed design of the new facility, the next phase of the process to build new Belmont Beach and Aquatic Center, estimated to cost $103.1 million.

The meeting, held at the Golden Sails Hotel’s Crystal Ballroom from 9:00AM to 11:00AM, will feature a time-slot devoted to the design team as well as informing attendees about the DEIR, which will provide the public and decision makers with comprehensive data about the project’s environmental effects, reasonable alternatives to the project and ways to minimize the significant environmental effects.

“It’s a proposed design, we’re proposing it to the public and we’re proposing it through the environmental impact report,” said Rachael Tanner, a program specialist at the City’s Manager’s Office. “[…] People have the opportunity to respond, comment and give feedback.”

Last year’s meeting was held to gain community insight on the design of the facility; the input has been incorporated into the design, according to Tanner. The DEIR will be officially released, in its entirety, to the community following the meeting.

The cost of the project will be funded by oil lease revenues generated through the city. A portion of the city’s property is leased to California Resources by the city and a portion of the company’s profits is shared with the city, according to Tanner.

Concept approved by the city in October 2014 for the new Belmont Pool site.

Long Beach residents bid adieu to the Belmont Pool when demolition crews tore down what was left of it in December 2014, due to earthquake safety concerns. In October 2014, the City Council gave the City Manager the green light to finalize the plan for a new pool designed to take the 1960s landmark’s place.

The Golden Sails Hotel is located on 6285 East Pacific Coast Highway Long Beach, CA 90803.

This report was  updated at 5:18PM clarifying the design review part of the meeting.
