Police say they’re investigating after a man died shortly after authorities found him injured and in need of medical attention in the area of Long Beach Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

The man, identified as 59-year-old Anthony Mercy, was found around 3:18 p.m. in the 1900 block of Long Beach Boulevard, according to the Long Beach Police Department. He died shortly after police arrived to assist the Long Beach Fire Department.

While at the scene, investigators learned that Mercy was possibly involved in a dispute or altercation on Tuesday near 14th Street Park and Seaside Park in the city’s Washington neighborhood which may have led to the injuries that caused his death, police said.

Authorities have not confirmed a cause or manner of death, but police are asking for the public’s help to identify witnesses and gather more information about the incident.

In the meantime, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office will investigate the cause of Mercy’s death.
