North Long Beach drivers can expect to come across a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint in the area this Saturday, from 7:00PM to 3:00AM, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) announced Wednesday.

LBPD officers will be on the lookout for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, as well as proper licensing. Those caught driving under the influence can expect jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can add up to fines and fees of $10,000 or more.

According to the LBPD, DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests and are chosen with safety considerations for both the officers and the public.

“Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions in Long Beach have claimed 9 lives and resulted in 315 injury crashes harming 420 of our friends and neighbors,” said Long Beach Police Department Sergeant Aaron Alu in a statement.

Research shows that accidents involving an impaired driver can be reduced by 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted on a routine basis.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the LBPD by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’
