Long Beach area members of the House of Representatives—all Democrats—unanimously favor at least beginning impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump after this week’s revelations about the president’s interactions with his counterpart in Ukraine.

Three local House members—Rep. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach; Rep. Nanette Barragan, D-San Pedro; and Rep. Harley Rouda, D-Huntington Beach—are among more than two dozen Democrats calling for impeachment of the president, given the evidence provided through a whistleblower complaint, the transcript of a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and testimony Thursday by the acting intelligence chief.

The proceedings to determine whether Trump committed “high crimes and misdemeanors” stems from a complaint that alleges the president used his power to convince Zelensky to investigate Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

Here’s what four local members of the House have said about this week’s developments:

Rep. Alan Lowenthal

Lowenthal has been calling for impeachment proceedings since late May in the wake of the report released by special counsel Robert Mueller earlier this year.

This week, he described the recent allegations in the whistleblower report as “shocking.”

“The president is trying to weaponize our foreign policy for political gain, and White House officials participated in a coverup,” he tweeted.

Lowenthal said he intends to vote in favor of articles of impeachment because he was elected to uphold the constitutional duties of a member of Congress: “It is time to hold this president accountable.”

Lowenthal represents District 47, which includes most of Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill and several cities in Orange County, including Los Alamitos and Buena Park.

Rep. Linda Sanchez

Sanchez this week called for an impeachment inquiry, saying the president betrayed his oath and that his actions threatened national security. “No one is above the law,” she tweeted Thursday.

Sanchez also released the following statement:

“It has become glaringly clear that Trump used his official office, including threatening our taxpayer dollars, to look for dirt from a foreign counterpart just so he could try to undermine a political opponent. The most recent whistleblower complaint is a serious national security matter that requires our immediate attention, yet the Director of National Intelligence continues to withhold information, undermining Congress, the rule of law and our democracy.

Congress and the American people deserve to know whether the President encouraged a foreign country to interfere with the 2020 election. If it turns out that he did, I believe that President Trump must be impeached.”

Sanchez represents District 38, which includes Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, parts of Lakewood and several cities in the San Gabriel Valley.

Rep. Nanette Barragan

Barragan said Tuesday that Trump betrayed his oath of office and “seriously comprised our national security.”

For this reason, she supports impeaching Trump.

Barragan represents the 44th District, which includes North Long Beach, San Pedro, Carson and Wilmington.

Rep. Harley Rouda

Rouda, who defeated Republican stalwart Dana Rohrabacher last fall, is also calling for impeachment.

Rouda represents the 48th District, which includes Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa and other Orange County cities.
