The bids are in and Sully-Miller Contracting Company has been chosen for the Anaheim Street Repaving Project, slated to break ground this summer. According to Neil Morrison, Director of Engineering Design with the Port of Long Beach, the contract is now contingent on Board approval in May.
“Contracts should be fully in place and executed by July 3, with an estimated Notice to Proceed by the end of July, at which point the work can begin,” Morrison said.
The project is designed to resurface pavement problems and repair some of the center medians on Anaheim Street between the Los Angeles River and 9th Street. In 2011, Morrison spoke to the Westside Project Area Council and explained that the Port had developed a Pavement Management Plan for which a scale was created to rate road surfaces, 100 being best and zero being worst, with a cutoff point set at 65. Anything below 65 would then be scheduled for some level of repair. The strip of Anaheim targeted rated an eight, making it the first and highest priority.
There are four phases outlined for this much-needed make-over.
In Phase One, traffic will be relegated to both outside lanes, east and westbound, so that the center medians can be removed and temporary pavement lain. Phase Two will see westbound traffic moved to the center while westbound lanes and parkways are constructed. Once completed, traffic will be moved back and the eastbound lanes then moved to the center so that the south side can be addressed. The center medians will be reconstructed in Phase Three, and Phase Four consists of final paving and striping, as well as fresh landscaping, upgraded traffic signals, and LED lighting installed in all street lights.
The project is estimated to take 396 calendar days to complete, sans holidays, which translates to a year-plus, during which traffic will be impacted on this stretch of troubled road.
