The Press-Telegram announced yesterday that it will bring aboard Linda Lindus as its new publisher, after Mark Ficarra jumped ship for a position at the San Diego Union Tribune.

The 61-year-old Lindus comes from Longview, Washington, where she served as the publisher of the Longview Daily News. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, the LDN enjoyed a daily readership of about 21,000. Lindus now steps up to head the Press-Telegram as well as the Torrance Daily Breeze, which have a combined daily circulation of 143,000.

Does it matter that Lindus’ new position has nearly seven times the readership as her last? Does it signal a desire to return the P-T and DB to locally-based reporting? Does it signal anything? It may not. But it is worth noting that this is – at least recently – Lindus’ most high profile position. A statement from the Press-Telegram highlights her past stops with The Spectrum in St. George, Utah and The Illinoisan in Carbondale, Illinois, which are both considerably smaller markets that the one she now controls (plus, one of them rhymes with annoyin’).

Lindus begins her new position on August 17. Click here for the Press-Telegram article, written by John Canalis and Donna Littlejohn, about her introduction.
