Later this month, the Long Beach City Council will examine a proposal to create a smart-phone application that would allow residents to report and photograph societal blight such as graffiti, potholes and more. Messages sent from residents’ phones would be sent directly to City staff, and a GPS code would show the exact location of the report.

The City Council will examine the “Long Beach City App” during their January 19 meeting. The measure is proposed by 1st District Councilmember Robert Garcia and cosponsored by Gary DeLong of District 3 and Patrick O’Donnell of District 4.

“This is a simple and inexpensive way to help beautify the neighborhoods, increase efficiency in the city, and to involve more residents, especially young people, in the community,” said Councilmember Garcia, in a press release Friday. “I’m hopeful we can get this running in the first half of 2010.”

The press release noted that both Pittsburgh and Boston have already instituted similar programs.
