The Press Telegram reports that the Long Beach Police Officers Association members voted to support their new contract saving the city nearly $8 million by agreeing to phase in a 10 percent pay increase over the next few years.

According to the Press Telegram: Long Beach Police Officers Association Steve James declined to discuss the specifics of the potential contract, explaining that it hasn’t yet gone to the city council for approval and that the contract was negotiated in closed-door sessions.

James, however, did confirm the potential contract change could have a significant impact on the city’s $38 million deficit and that the benefits would be felt almost immediately if approved by the council.

“We have essentially lowered the city’s deficit by $8 million off one year,” James said Thursday afternoon.
