DSC 0395The public is invited to join the grand opening of the Houghton Park Fitness Zone on Tuesday, November 24 at 9:00AM, the City of Long Beach recently announced.

In attendance will be Mayor Robert Garcia, Councilmember Rex Richardson and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Public Works and Health and Human Services in celebrating the introduction of this health-minded addition to the north section of the park.

“I’m so pleased to see this Fitness Zone implemented as the first project in the Houghton Park Conceptual Plan,” said Richardson in a statement. “There are more great things to come in North Long Beach.”

The Fitness Zone is composed of nine exercise stations, including a four-person pendulum “Abs and Dips” station, a lower body combo machine, a four-person leg press, a three-person cross country ski machine and a three-person static combo machine for sit-ups and pull ups, according to the release. A vertical press, pull down lift for lats (back muscles), chest press and upper body combo machine are accessible for persons with mobility hindrances.

Funding for the Houghton Park Fitness Zone is supported by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Zone grant from Kaiser Permanente to encourage the public in targeted areas of North Long Beach to take charge of their health, specifically in the 9th District, and one-time Infrastructure funds allocated for 9th Council District projects, the release stated.
